FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

Tomorrow's Riverkeepers

The Kentucky RIVERKEEPER, Bluegrass Rotary Club and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources recently partnered to provide a day of learning about the Kentucky River for the Kidz Konnection Klub in Madison County.

About 30 children came to the Kentucky River Museum at Fort Boonesborough State Park on Saturday, August 29 to participate in the unveiling of the Kentucky Riverkeeper fresh-water aquarium.

The aquarium was filled with aquatic life from a tributary creek of the Kentucky River. Children with the Kidz Konnection Klub got to learn about the ecology of the river and how important it is to protect the river since it provides drinking water to half a million Kentucky residents.

“The aquarium gives museum visitors a chance to marvel at the creatures of the stream and make the connection that their good health reflects the health of our community,” said Pat Banks, the Kentucky Riverkeeper director.

The children were allowed to look into the aquarium and view river wildlife up close. They also got to participate in an art activity and paint their very own river fish, and later in the day, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources educators took the children to the river to fish.

The Riverkeeper received funds for the fresh-water aquarium through grant money, and filled the aquarium with species caught in the spring by members of the Riverkeeper and the Bluegrass Rotary Club.

Madison County Judge Executive, Kent Clark was also at the event to help educate the children from Kids Konnection Klub about the river. Clark has been a longtime supporter of the Kentucky Riverkeeper’s efforts to educate others about the importance of keeping the Kentucky River clean and healthy.
